Nishimura & Asahi and Tokyo partner Kojiro Fujii have been shortlisted for the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards Asia-Pacific 2024, presented by the Financial Times and its research partner, RSGI Limited. The awards recognize innovative law firms, lawyers, and in-house legal teams in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Most Innovative Law Firm in Asia-Pacific (headquartered in Asia-Pacific)
- Innovative Lawyers in Deal Making : Toshiba’s Privatization
The nomination recognizes our legal work for Toshiba on its consideration of alternatives, which crystalized into an unprecedented privatization via public auction – the biggest in Japan’s M&A history – through creative auction design, unrivalled due diligence, regulatory hurdles and the balancing of transparency with competitiveness.
Our team advising Toshiba was led by partners Hiroshi Uchima and Keitaro Hamada from our corporate/M&A practice, Kozo Kawai and Madoka Shimada from our competition/antitrust law practice, Hiroko Jimbo who handled FDI related matters, and Hideo Horikoshi, Toshiyuki Nonaka and Takenobu Tsuruoka from our finance practice.
- Innovative Practitioner : Kojiro Fujii
Our Tokyo partner Kojiro Fujii specializes in international trade law and competition law. The nomination recognizes his work leading a team of highly talented lawyers on a number of cases involving cross-border trade matters with growing geopolitical tensions. Kojiro’s innovative approach stems from his extensive experience handling government trade matters requiring a comprehensive understanding of macroeconomics, as well as industrial and diplomatic policies. Armed with a competitive edge and multi-faceted insight, he navigates his clients to optimum outcomes.
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Hong Kong on May 16, 2024.

While he has extensive experience in large-scale and complex M&A transactions, he also provides efficient and effective advice depending on the status of the project in areas such as overseas M&A of Japanese companies, expansion into Japan by overseas companies, and support for startup businesses.
